What happened to Artyom?
Speaking plainly, it’s something like this: imagine a building which was made of bricks, but without any cement. The bricks are not joined at all and that’s why any push can make such a brick building collapse.
In Artyom’s case the ‘cement’ is connective tissue that doesn’t function properly due to systemic lupus erythematosus. The functions of other inner organs have also been disrupted: the boy’s got some cardiac diseases and his blood pressure has dramatically risen up to 200. As a result of this, the kidney vessels may burst, leading to internal hemorrhaging.
Systemic lupus erythematosus – is an autoimmune disease. The patient’s immune system in this case does not defend itself as it normally should, but fights with its own cells. So, it’s a sort of a system disorder.
Artyom was first diagnosed with this disease at the age of two. However, this disease was not only hard to diagnose, but to treat to as well. Till the age of thirteen, Artyom’s mother and the doctors of the Berdyansk hospital tried their very best to suppress the disease and prohibit it from ‘engulfing’ the boy’s body. But as soon as Artyom reached an awkward age, he had a crisis. In 2009, in a critical condition the boy was taken to the capital clinic OHMADET where he got some proper courses of treatment and was brought into remission. The little patient was successfully responding to treatment until another relapse. Artyom’s body has evidently developed a resistance to his medication.
Now Artyom is at home, lying in bed. The boy is very weak. His pulse is really slow as a result of the second crisis and, on top of that, he’s under a constant threat of internal bleeding. His coagulogramma results are poor. Artyom’s intravascular coagulation function is very weak and he should urgently come back to the OHMADET clinic. The Berdyansk doctors cannot provide the boy with a treatment course which would lead him out of the current crisis (immunoglobulin, hormones, and a chemotherapy are selected on a trial basis).
But Artyom’s mother doesn’t have any money, even for the hospital trip. To begin with, the boy needs at least 7, 000 hryvnyas (873 US dollars). As soon as Artyom arrives in Kyiv, he will have to take a costly examination that will define what is going inside the child’s body. After that the boy should purchase some medicine and other required medical aides. Every day the boy’s mother asks her neighbors to look after her sick son, as she has to ‘hunt for’ some financial support even though nobody has responded positively so far. Let’s help this boy! Although the boy’s prognosis is not really promising now, there is still a chance to conquer his disease and to hope for a successful outcome.
