Five years ago little Alexander had an accident – he injured his eye with a nail. This penetrating wound resulted in blindness of his injured eye. The boy’s parents started to struggle for their boy’s eye by undergoing treatment in their home town Zaporizhzhya and later in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. Although Alexander got a new artificial crystalline lens in the Kyiv Ohmatdet clinic, the boy’s trauma was irreversible. That means it is impossible to restore vision in the injured eye. To top it all, the doctors could not stop the inflammatory process of the injured eye. However, it was decided to keep the boy’s eye for a while in the hope that this inflammatory process would be successfully eliminated.
Not long after the shocking accident Alexander had to face, he became an intensive care unit patient again. In July, 2011 the boy suddenly got an internal hemorrhage. The doctors fought for Alexander’s life for several days. It turned out that the hemorrhage was caused by portal hypertension. This is defined as a portal pressure gradient (the difference in pressure between the portal vein and the hepatic veins). Therefore, hemorrhage can occur even in the abdominal cavity.

Alexander recovered after his hemorrhage but the danger of another one still exists… The only possible solution for the boy’s varicose veins is to undergo anastomosis surgery.
It’s known that misfortunes never come singly. Soon after the hemorrhage the boy got serious complications of his previously injured eye (hemophthalmia). Due to ruptured blood vessels, the eyeball suffered a massive hemorrhage which poses a threat to his second healthy eye… Alexander’s parents had no option but to have their son’s injured eye urgently amputated in the Kyiv clinic.
Alexander with his mom is currently at the Ohmatdet clinic. The eye amputation operation went successfully and he has even got a temporary prosthesis. Nevertheless, the doctors don’t plan to discharge the boy from the clinic yet as the risk of internal hemorrhage is rather high. Therefore, as soon as the little patient recovers from his eye amputation, he should have interior vein bypass surgery.
One can only wonder at Alexander’s optimism: after everything this little boy had to overcome he keeps on smiling and joking and this cheers his parents and sister up. The only thing that brings the parents back to reality is their financial issue. Alexander’s parents are confused about where they can find the money for all the necessary treatment medications. All their own and borrowed money had been already spent on the first surgery. So, there are no funds left for the next coming surgery.
Alexander also needs to undergo some further examinations at the Filatov clinic (Russia) where he had his interior bypass surgery. This examination will reveal the condition of the bypass and whether it is clotted. This will also allow them to predict any possible risk of future haemorrhage etc.
Alexander urgently needs your help now! This July the boy is going to have some more examinations in Moscow! This trip requires around 625 US dollars.
