Such words as cancer and tumor make most people fall into despair. As a matter of fact, no one really accepts this diagnosis lightheatedly, let alone if it’s your own child….
We often witness crying moms who appeal for some financial help to our charity foundation. However, the number of suffering dads is not really smaller; men just tend to hide their tears and pain.
A tremendously anxious man visited us the other day. His quiet life in a small sea city, Berdyansk, has been absolutely upside down since his older son was diagnosed with Burkitt’s lymphoma. One day his son Kiril suddenly felt some stomachache so he was taken to the hospital where doctors revealed something serious... Later in Zaporizhzhia the boy was finally diagnosed with Burkitt’s lymphoma and has started his chemotherapy.
The cancer treatment usually includes:
- Computerized or magnetic resonance tomography that all in all cost around 300 US dollars (the cost also depends on the quantity of examined areas and the necessity of administering some contrast medium);
- Blood tests in a private laboratory require around 24-50 US dollars;
- Purchase of some supportive medicine for the chemotherapy that is not always available at a local hospital (anti-inflammatory drugs and white-blood cells promoting factors). They cost approximately 62-150 US dollars. In addition, this sum of money may also include subclavian catheters, diapers and medical solutions, etc.
- Living and fare expenses since Kiril has to stay at the hospital in Zaporizhzhia alone and one of his parents has to visit him regularly.
Kiril’s parents have already run out of their all saved money. They have even spent the money that was meant for Kiril’s hearing aids and his initial treatment in Berdyansk. The Mirchenko family was not ready for such a sudden turnaround of events in their life. Most Ukrainian families who face cancer only earn enough to ‘survive’. Therefore, Kiril’s parents urgently need some financial support.
Even though parents of sick children go through tough emotional and financial times they try to get used to a new daily routine of their life…Fear and pain do not vanish but one should derive strength from something. We’re appealing to everyone of you to be this source of strength and support for Kiril and his father Ruslan who has to look after his son while his wife cares for two younger children at home.
Kiril before illness
The first chemotherapy course went rather smoothly. Kiril is feeling much better since his digestion system and other vitally important functions became stabilized.
A year has passed already for Kiril as he bravely fights for his life. However, he still has a long journey ahead before achieving a full recovery. This means more treatment courses and four stages of chemotherapy.
This three month course of treatment will cost Kiril’s parents approximately 6,000 hryvnyas (735 US dollars).
