In 2012 as ill luck would have it an eleven-year old Karina was pushed by her schoolmates, so she hit her head on the corner of a desk. This accident resulted in some liquid in her brain. The following week Karina underwent bypass surgery. Since that day the girl has been regularly monitored by physicians.
On April 2, Karina and her mom were on their way home from Yevpatoria (Crimea) where the girl had a rehabilitation course. Suddenly Karina became a terrible headache, seizures and then lost her consciousness. She was rushed to the hospital straight from the Zaporizhzhia train station. Karina opened her eyes at the intensive care unit of the Zaporizhzhia regional children’s hospital.
“Don’t worry, honey! You felt unwell, so you were taken to the hospital. Your mom is around but she is not allowed to be here. You will see your mom as soon as you feel better”, - the nurse tried to cheer up scared Karina.
Karina has overcome three CAT scans and two complicated surgeries. The examination showed that Karina has some pus in her brain.
The physicians have installed four tubes that pump out the pus. Karina is in a very critical condition. The only way for her to survive and recover is urgently to purchase 50 bottles of Meropenem antibiotics (1.0. grams), one bottle of which costs approximately 19 US dollars. Karina’s life now depends on this antibiotics course that costs approximately 925 US dollars. This is an enormous sum of money Karina’s mother cannot raise by herself.
Karina and her mom live in a small village in the west of Ukraine. Karina’s father left the family, so they have absolutely no one to rely on. They are away from home and the only hope left is our mutual support.
Karina and her mom Iryna can hardly make their ends meet. They have spent all the money for rehabilitation courses and treatment. There are thousands of questions but no reply to any of them. But there is a ray of hope. Let’s keep Karina in our prayers!
