“On 23 March my vascular access has been finally removed. Now I feel something is missing as I really got used to it. I feel I’m kind of deficient now. In three days I will have another dialysis and I feel so scared I have never been in my entire life. If they miss my vein in the first try, my hemoglobin level will go down and my renal transplantation will be postponed for an indefinite period of time again. I took some valerian pills, my hands shaking, and looked forward for 26 March. And so this day came!
I came, got weighted, laid down on the hospital bed, biting my lips. The medics were trying my veins. “Work with your hand”, one of them was telling me. But how hard could I work? It felt as if my hand was going to burst, my armpit went shaking. I heard somebody’s voice, “Ganzina has got bad veins, it’s all risky and complicated”. I know very well that my veins are bad, but fistula is my life!
The doctor took a catheter, put it into the vein. I saw he was nervous. He opened the catheter and I saw blood pouring out! I thought, thanks God, they did it! Then they had the fistula ready, started the machine, with the speed low. Whew, the hardest part was over.
I was lying straight, as always, in a semi-sitting position, as I had my head going round. But it was okay, I could bear it, I wouldn’t get off the machine anyway. And nobody knows what awaits me on Sunday. It will be even harder as my bruises after this dialysis will be much worse than after all the previous procedures”, Viktoria shared her fears and emotions with me while we were talking on the phone. She is getting herself ready for the donor renal transplantation. It is fearful, complicated, expensive, but… there is no other choice as her life is hanging on a thread.
Viktoria before she got sick
It all started back in 2010. Viktoria graduated from the institute, got a profession in the hospitality industry and tourism. She got a job in Turkey as a tourist guide, was getting acquainted with the national culture, history, traditions, sharing her knowledge with tourists and improving her foreign languages. But with every trip Viktoria’s health deteriorated. When she went to Turkey in 2013 to earn some money, she felt so bad that she was only brought to life through intensive care. The girl went home, where she went through high-cost treatment in Zaporozhzhye Regional Hospital. She was diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus and, as a complication, renal disease!
Examinations, consultations, treatment. Viktoria was prescribed with renal dialysis, with one procedure costing UAH 1,800 (67 US dollars), while the girl needed at least 2 procedures per week. She had to cover the costs from her own pocket until her disability status was approved. Now she receives the dialysis free of charge. She is getting prepared for donor transplantation, which will most likely take place in a couple of weeks. It is hard to tell the exact date as it all depends on the girl’s health state.
This surgery will require approximately UAH 70 thousand (2,600 US dollars) for medical drugs only, not to mention other expenses which their young family has and will further have to cover.
Several months ago Viktoria and Anton registered their marriage between the dialysis procedures. Despite the hard situation in their family, the girl’s boyfriend decided to inspire her to further fight with her disease with such a gesture. They are together no matter what! The young family lives in a dormitory for 7 years already, they try to bring comfort to their home, dream about having children, but it all has to wait. First of all, Viktoria has got to live! She has got to go through this surgery, but she and her husband can’t make it without our support.
