Serhii Matveychuk writes us about himself: «My name is Serhii Matveychuk, I was born in 1993 in Sumy city. For over three years, from 1996 to 1999, I was sick with pneumonias and bronchitis. For a long time, my doctors could not discover the reason until one doctor from the regional hospital, after the tests results, made the diagnosis of CYSTIC FIBROSIS. The diagnosis was confirmed in Kyiv at the Pediatric and OB-GYN Institute. It was confirmed due to a DNA analysis, the F508 gene mutation was stated. A corrective therapy with use of Pancreatin (Creon 8.000) was prescribed. Later on, the manufacturer launched a new line of this product - Creon 10.000, I take it till now. Since the medicine had been prescribed the dosage of it increased».
Even when there are problems, we must not forget about the main thing: «In 2000, I started to study at primary school, and I started to have my classes of sport dances and ballet at the same time to develop respiratory system as the dancing requires correct breathing. At the school, I was not among the best students as I often missed classes because of the disease. For medical reasons and according the decision of the Teaching Staff Board of the secondary school, I switched for home schooling. Nevertheless, I continued taking ballet classes at the school conducted by Olga Garanina; I took part in the dancing competitions and wan prizes».
Between 1999 and 2011, I received free of cost medications through the prescriptions of my pediatrician. These were medications lists per month Creon 10.000 - 37 packs, Hepabene and Ambroxol as mandatory, and antibiotics.
There are always moments when something does not work out, but you should not give up because «Failure is only when not tried!»: «In 2010, I graduated from high school and, as I wanted to be programmer, with big difficulties I was unlisted for the Computer Science to the IT-Technologies Department at the Sumy State University (Sumy city, Ukraine).
Because of the low average results on Certificate of Secondary Education and of External Independent Testing, I could only go to the self-funded form of education. After the 1st semester of studies, due to good performance I switched to the state-subsidized form of education. Gradually, I was able to gain respect of professors and students due to my perseverance and good knowledge. On the advice of the professors, I moved to the strongest group, students of that group had been preparing for the Graduate School. I participated in many educational and scientific conferences held by our High School and others high schools. After the selection tests, I was assigned for study at the International Summer Academy of the University of Koblenz - Landau (Koblenz, Germany).
Finally, I had to leave sports dance and ballet classes. At the first year of education at the high school, I attended the athletics section of this school, but I had to quit, because the studies and scientific activities took a lot of time. On the fourth year in the high school I was invited by NETCRASKER Company to work at their Technical Support Department ».
The disease is gradually gaining momentum, creating more problems, and even when the situation is not so good, the closest people always come for help: « Throughout the period of time from 1999 to 2017, I am struggling for my life. My mom helps me in this, and grandparents who constantly fight against the bureaucracy in state health system. Since long ago, it takes a lot of time and effort to carve out free-of-charge prescription for 37 packs of the most important medicine Creon-10.000 (Pancreatin). Very often, grandpa goes to the Health Ministry to see the Minister or his deputies. They always request for my participation in the ministry programmes on medication provision, but there is "0" (zero) result.
They prescribe me only 37 packs of Creon-10.000 since 2017, after the Head of the Gastroenterology Department of SCH No. 5 (Sumy City Clinical Hospital No. 5) adjusted the therapy. They issued the free-of-charge recipes for 50 packs of Creon-10.000 for January and February 2017. All other necessary medicines, for example, in case of exacerbation it is antibiotics hepatoprotectors and mucolytic agent to liquefy mucus, I have to buy from my own money. I have never had inhalations with such a medicine as Pulmozyme, Colistimethatum Natrium, Tobramycin-Gobbi. And again, Ursodeoxycholic Acid I bought for my own money when I urgently needed this therapy course».
Never for one moment Serhii`s enemy does leave him, even in the period of holidays. It is ready to strike at any time:
«Starting with December 2016 when I got the viral infection, a pulmonary exacerbation started leading later to pneumonia. From 04.01.2017 till 18.01.2017 I was hospitalized at the Department of Pulmonology of the Sumy Central City Hospital No. 1. According to the prescription of regional lung specialist, my therapy included the medicines like Moxifloxacin, Linezolid, Meglumini Natrii Succinas, Meldonium, Carbocisteine. Later on, Moxifloxacin and Linezolid were replaced by Amikacini Sulfas and Ceftazidime. This therapy doesn't help much, I have fever every day.»
«By the prescriptions of the geneticist I need inhalations with the medicines as follows: Colistimethate Sodium / Colistimethatum Natricum, Tobramycin-Gobbi / Tobramycin, Dornase Alfa, but I cannot afford them.»
I remember my childhood, when I could run, I could pass long distances without shortness of breath and stoppings. Everything seemed to be so bright and cheerful then. Now everything is different. I want to walk properly, speak without shortness of breath, and return to the sports, but this condition does not allow me none of this. All the mornings and evenings, I do respiratory gymnastics, but it's just a drop in the sea of treatment. Without the necessary medicines, my state will deteriorate, and I dread to wait for the next exacerbation because antibiotics that I can buy will not help me anymore.
Our Found tries to help Serhii Matveychuk to the best of its ability! And we hope YOU will not leave this boy alone with his insatiable scourge!!!
