A fascinating trip to Dnipropetrovsk for fifteen children from the Zaporizhia Orphanage #3

June 8, 2011, 9:00 4681 Author: Vera Korablina, Albert Pavlov, translated by Daria Sukach www.deti.zp.ua At the end of March 2011 the children had a wonderful opportunity to visit The History Museum, Shevchenko Park, the Zoo as well as enjoy amusement rides and learn a lot of new things about the neighboring megapolis.

“Oh long-drawn highway, how excellent you are! How often have I in weariness and despondency set forth upon your length, and found in you salvation and rest! How often, as I followed your leading, have I been visited with wonderful thoughts and poetic dreams and curious, wild impressions!”

by Nikolai Gogol

Dnipropetrovsk, which is situated just 80 kilometers away from Zaporizhia, is a large city with rich history and lots of interesting places to see.

It’s not the first time that “The Happy Child”Charity Foundation has organized such excursions to this city for children from Zaporizhia orphanages. Luckily, it’s possible to get to Dnipropetrovsk by suburban train, that is free of charge for orphans. It definitely makes the trip cheaper and gives us a great opportunity within a day to show children lots of sightseeing in the neighboring megapolis.

At the end of March 2011, within the scope of our touristic project for orphans fifteen children from the Rehabilitation Center (the former Orphanage # 3) visited Dnipropetrovsk.

The volunteers Lera and Ania from Dnipropetrovsk assisted us in organizing the excursion. Straight from the railway station we headed for Yavornitskiy History Museum. Our museum guide Egor gave us a captivating tour around the seven museum halls, each of them represents a certain epoch in the history of the city and Ukraine. We felt for ourselves a sense of our ancestral history.

After visiting the museum we surveyed the military equipment and then went to the Svevchenko Park. The children and their teachers went along a picturesque bridge to the Monastyrskiy (Komsomolskiy) island. The children also visited the Zoo, saw many different animals and at the end of our trip they enjoyed exciting amusement rides. Then our trip team had lunch and made a little break.

The time flew by very quickly, so it was already time to go back home! Although our return journey took us around three hours by suburban train, the children were full of positive impressions and joy!

We’re grateful to our volunteers for this interesting project as well as to all the kind people who make their donations for excursions and walking tours for little orphans. Everyone can join us and help orphans or children from large families to broaden their minds and visit interesting places! What’s more, an excursion to, for instance, Dnipropetrovsk costs around 50 hryvnyas (6, 25 US dollars) –meal and trip fare included. However, children will forever remember this trip!
