Diagnosis – diffuse large cell anaplastic non-Hodgkin lymphoma, 2 stage.

Igor’s was born on February, 16th, 1990.

Now Igor remembers practically nothing about the events that happened to him 6 years ago. Punctures, I.Vs, acupunctures, long months of treatment spent in the hospital seemed to disappear from the memory forever, as every unpleasant event in our life. But the annual medical examining was the event that somewhat broke the rhythm of Igor and his mom’s life, causing unpleasant memories and the fear that the illness might be back.

But as the time went by, this family was more and more sure that the terrible illness – non-Hodgkin lymphoma was in the past. Igor lives a usual life – he learns in school, plays football, takes part in the competitions of Club for the Lightheaded and Quick-witted, he is interested in computers – he is good at system administration and sites creation. He plans to finish school and enter Zaporozhye National Technical University at the speciality that deals with computer science.

Suddenly, in August 2007, Igor discovered that the lymph node was increased, and in some time the other lymph nodes too. The guy’s overall health was quite normal, but the strange symptoms always worry his mother, and they go to Zaporozhye Regional Children hospital to have some consulting. After a number of medical tests and examining, after the trip to Kiev Okhmatdet Specialized Children's Hospital the terrible diagnosis was staged - diffuse large cell anaplastic lymphoma, 2 stage. In fact, it was even not the backset, but the secondary tumor. The lymph nods started to increase rapidly in different parts of the body, the temperature was increasing as well.

The Children Chief Hematologist of Ukraine Svetlana Donskaya recommends the immediate chemotherapy according to the program R-ICE, one of the medicines used is MABTERA (Rituximab). The medicine is much more effective than the former generation of cytostatics, and as a great number of doctors think, its usage in treatment of non-Hodgkin lymphoma will double Igor’s chances to recover.

The questions is: where can Natalya Vladimirovna, Igor’s mother, find 11000 hrivnas ($2200) for each ampoule of Mabtera? The course of four acts will require not less than 6 ampoules of the medicine, i.e. 66000 hrivnas. After the chemotherapy with MABTERA usage the doctors recommend to perform the transplantation of the congenial bone marrow in Okhmatdet. This will cost from $5000 to $8000.

In spite of the idea that Natalya brings up her son alone, and the fact, that the family has practically no money, Igor and his mother won’t give up. They are ready to struggle, they don’t groan, but just do what the should, and they follow the saying: “Diagnosis is not a sentence, it is a guide to actions.”

Natalya’s co-workers at the company where she works have already raised money several times to treat her son. Unfortunately, according to our law, Natalya Vladymyrovna can’t even have the sick-leave, because her son is already 17 y.o., and the sick leave can be granted only for children yonger than 14. Natalya already asked for help from all her relatives, now the written applications with request for help are being prepared to be sent to the government, different foundations.

Natalya is ready to borrow money, but we have absolutely no time for it!!! In a few days we need to begin the treatment. Either we find the money for 2 ampoules of MABTERA (22000 hrivnas) or the doctors start the treatment according to the old act without MABTERA, and here the chances for recovery decrease. Every mother would do anything possible to save her child – that’s exactly what Natalya does.

We, Zaporozhye volunteers, ask for help from all good people – please, try and find any possibility to help this guy! May be you will have to refuse from buying not so important thing for you or don’t go a couple of times to the cinema or restaurant… The sum of 66 000 hrivnas is too large for Natalya and Igor, but it is not a large sum for several hundreds of those, who care.

Let’s think, let’s care about the problem of this family, let’s help Igor and Natalya! I believe that this guy will be provided all the necessary medicine. We just have no right to act differently, do we?

P.s.: at this moment we have 8000 hrivnas for Igor. In order to begin the treatment that can be started just from today, we need to pay for the first two ampoules of MABTERA - 22000 hrivnas. So today we need to collect minimum 14 000 hrivnas. Then we will have time – about 1-2 weeks to collect 22 000 hrivnas for the next two ampoules, and so on.
