A Child Needs a Family: Svetlana L., born in 1999

May 23, 2013, 12:00 7350 Author: Maria Semashkina, translated by Daria Sukach www.deti.zp.ua Music does not interest little Svetlana, all her days resemble each other. She seems to be constantly occupied with the question what is about her body that prevents her from having a loving mom and dad. Profile # 0061711

Unfortunately, there are still many doomed orphans in Ukraine, doomed to never be adopted into a loving family. This is especially so for children with special needs. They are doomed to eternal loneliness. They are doomed to eternal silence. The hearts of these children are unlikely to rejoice about this “eternal peace”, however.

Little Svetlana is one of these special children, the children who are surrounded by eternal peace and eternal winter, ice-cold hearts of adults. Honestly speaking, I’m not good at dealing with such special children like Svetlana.

I do sometimes try to change something in world of such special children. I simply stroke their hands or just switch music on my cell phone. I recently brought the children a new musical toy with some stuff whirling around. Almost all the children I considered to be hopeless enthusiastically responded to the music. Almost everyone, except for Svetlana…

Svetlana has become accustomed to her “eternal silence”, so she was literally “hiding” herself away from background sounds and new people. We grown ups sometimes tend to get accustomed to loneliness and go into our shell. Some children are obviously the same.

Svetlana often puts her fingers into her mouth and touches her face as if trying to realize what is actually wrong with her. Why is her soul hidden in such a body? And why did her mommy abandon her…?

This fourteen-year old girl is so deeply occupied by her own body since there is nothing else she could basically do. What’s more, adults do not try to change it because she is just one of many in her group. What if Svetlana found a loving family? What if someone gave her a bit more attention during the meal time, changing nappies and washing? What would be? A miracle? Would Svetlana grow to love the world of sounds and finally look at the face of life with a happy smile?

If you are interested in adopting Svetlana, please read the memo to the potential adoptive parents, guardians, and foster parents; you can also contact Children’s Affairs' service of the Zaporozhia State Administration by telephone (061) 239-01-56. Request the Profile Number of Svetlana accordingly to the orphan list # 0061711.

Other children who dream of finding a family

If for some reason you are currently not able to adopt (for example, you are a student and do not have a family of your own yet) you are still able to help children at a boarding school (an orphanage with your financial support. Ways you can help include: planning and participating in excursions and trips for children; visiting a child in an orphanage; or helping purchase developmental toys, books, construction sets, and sports equipment.
