Asya Agaieva

Asya’s fight for life has been going on for a year. It all started with severe complicated COVID-19. Bilateral pneumonia and acute respiratory failure caused her lungs to stop supplying the body with oxygen. In critical condition, Asya was transported by helicopter from Zaporizhzhia to Kyiv to the “Okhmatdyt” hospital.

To save the child, doctors used ECMO technology — a machine that temporarily performs the function of the lungs and oxygenates the blood outside the body. Asya remained on ECMO for 18 days. Her life was saved, but a severe complication occurred: dense scar membranes formed in the bronchi, blocking the airways and disrupting gas exchange.

The girl has undergone many bronchoscopies under anesthesia, during which doctors cut these formations and widen the bronchi. There is positive progress — Asya can already move independently within the hospital room. However, she remains oxygen-dependent and cannot do without a concentrator. Today, Asya is the only child in Ukraine with such a complex post-COVID respiratory system injury.

Further treatment in Kyiv is planned for the end of March. For transportation and daily life, a portable oxygen concentrator is urgently needed. It will ensure a stable oxygen supply and allow Asya to be mobile.

In addition to Asya, there are two more children in the family, and only the father works. After long treatment, the family is exhausted and needs our support. Together we can purchase a concentrator costing 120,000 hryvnias (approximately 2,830 US dollars) and give Asya not just a device — but the freedom to breathe and move.
