10,000 new orphans in Ukraine every year

April 20, 2012, 14:05 2098 Author: www.nrcu.gov.ua www.nrcu.gov.ua The Ministry of Social Policy, along with public organizations, is preparing a strategy of its work with families in crisis, which will help to prevent the removal of children from families and the deprivation of parental rights

The official said that there were currently 96,000 orphans and children deprived of parental care in Ukraine. At the same time, 10,000 orphans appear in the country every year. Moreover, in most cases, children become orphans due to the termination of parental rights. According to Tihipko, this could have been prevented if attention to the problems in the family were paid on time. "We need to work out a system of support to the family so as to keep it for the child. The main effort must focus on the prevention of child abandonment, rather than on the fight against its consequences. If the family has no money, it is necessary to support it, but if the problem lies in the parents, it is necessary to work with them. The main thing is to keep the family for the child," he said. The social policy minister also noted that the priority task of public policy was a switch from the boarding system to the family-type forms of the upbringing of orphaned children. "About 20,000 children are currently brought up at boarding schools. These children will receive much more attention and warmth if they grow up in the family forms of upbringing," the official said. According to Tihipko, it is necessary to develop additional incentives for people who are ready to bring up orphans and children deprived of parental care. In addition, it is necessary to strengthen financial support for parents who work in family-type homes and to help them solve everyday problems.
