=====================================
My name is Tania and I am 22. For 14 years, I have been living with a diagnosis of cystic fibrosis. I live in a small town of miners, Ternovka. My father died when I was 15. Now I live with my mother, who is unemployed, so I have to take care about both of us.
When I was 8, I was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis with pancreatic insufficiency. Before that, doctors in our small town could not make a diagnosis as they have never seen such cases before. Unfortunately, we lost a lot of time before we started treatment.
It was a new stage of my life – I knew my diagnosis and had access to the required treatment. In the beginning, there were no problems with medications. My parents and I were sure that one could live with cystic fibrosis in Ukraine. Doctors in my town prescribed free medications and invited us for regular medical check-ups in inpatient departments of our local clinic and regional hospital. Besides, I had an opportunity to go to resorts on a regular basis to improve my health. But as time passed, free medications became rarer and rarer, doctors told me different reasons they could not help me, we had to pay for tests, and my treatment became much of a burden for us. I rarely stayed in hospitals as it was cheaper to treat me at home following doctor’s recommendations.
Though I was a sick child, I went to school and was a diligent student.
When I turned 18, I had to face adult problems. That is when I understood that before my treatment used to cost us almost nothing. I was no longer a child, so our doctors refused to treat me or provide with free medications, not to mention free health resort vouchers.
Since 18 years of age, I take regular treatment courses in our city hospital. It is very expensive for me and I have to forget about many things, save money on food and medicines to go through this antibiotic treatment course in the clinic.
In the recent years, I really lack money to support my health, even to buy vital medications. Saving money led to weight loss, aggravation of my test results, and I noticed that I am “breaking down”. I get sick very often and going to the inpatient department for me is like a nightmare because I just don’t have money for it.
My mother and my brother do no help me. We are not very close as they think I am a burden for them, so they do not support me. Since the start of military conflict in Ukraine, the situation became really critical, the prices are sky rocketing and going to a drug store is each time a stress for me.
I do not know how to go on and sometimes I have really bad thought, wishing all my sufferings to come to an end. I do not have another way out apart from asking you for help, even though usually I do not like to complain and try to cope with all difficulties on my own.
I really love children, so I decided to become a teacher. Now I stay at home all the time but try to offer private lessons, helping children with their studies. Unfortunately, some parents are concerned about the health of their sons and daughters so I do not have many clients. But nevertheless I try to take any work if I can.
Besides, I like cooking, crocheting and doing various paper decorations. I have a good friend, puddle Kirusha. Sometimes it seems that he understands me and cares about me and when I feel really bad – even treats me.
I dream of having a family of my own, healthy children, getting cured. I dream of my family loving me the way I am and being proud of me.
If you can’t help me, I am afraid that I will just give up and stop fighting.
Every day I need the following medications:
Kreon 25,000, Ursofalk 500 mg, ACC long 600 mg, Pulmobreathe, calcium vitamin, Azithromycin, Vikasolum 15 mg, Seretide Discus - 500 mg, Asparkam, yogurt or Linex, Alora. Also, I need to make inhalations through nebulizer with the following drugs: Berodual, Lazolvan, Ingamist, Flixotide. Antibiotics are to be taken via injections in the period of acute periods of disease: Ciprofloxacinum, Vozapro, Lasoleks, Reosorbilact.
To cover my treatment costs, I need at least UAH 10,000 (400 US dollars) every month. I can’t make it if you don’t help me.
I was left alone to cope with my trouble, though I really need help and support.
I pray for kind people to help me as I just can’t survive alone. You are my only help, please do not let me give up my hopes.
Your support and your kindness is all that I have.
Thank you!
The family lives in the town of Ternovka, Dnipropetrovsk oblast.
