Palestine — The ladies of the Saline Baptist Association are using their sewing skills to impact others across the ocean through the Dallas-based Hearts of Love program.
So far, the local women have sent 111 blankets, 138 sleep outfits and 131 crocheted caps to be handed out to orphans of all ages in Russia, China and the Ukraine.
“We meet once a month – sewing at different churches as a way to draw other people into our group,” SBA member Katie Wilson said. “At first, the items we made were sent to Russia, but now Hearts of Love is distributing the items to other orphanages.”
Once the local group’s latest projects are sent to Hearts of Love headquarters in Dallas, the organization then sends the items to missionaries for delivery in the orphanages.
SBA member Mae Jordan said the women who meet for the project enjoy “spreading Christian Love” while sharing fellowship.
“That’s what God wants us to do,” Jordan said.
The next work session “sewing day” will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 7 at North Jackson Baptist Church. A devotion is usually held as well.
“This is one way to serve others,” Wilson said. “We are always available to help when we see a need.”
Those in the community who want to participate in the work session should bring sewing machines, scissors, sewing supplies and a sack lunch.
“Anyone who wants to help is welcome to join us,” SBA member Glenda Alfred said. “Even if you can’t sew, we can find some way for you to help.”
Donations of fabric and other sewing materials also are accepted by the group. Anyone interested in helping can contact Katie Wilson at 903-729-4873.
