For the first time, the family faced the problem when Dasha was 14 months old (in 2010). After falling down, the girl started complaining that the middle finger on her left hand was aching. Dasha’s parents took her to see a doctor in their local clinic. Healthcare workers assured the family that it was just a bruise and would pass in a week. Four weeks passed, but the pain and swelling did not go away, and the ointments prescribed by the doctors did not help.

In a while, Dasha caught a cold which progressed into tonsillitis, and a week after her right ankle joint was enlarged. The girl was taken to the regional children’s hospital, where she was diagnosed with reactive arthritis of unknown cause. Patients with this diagnosis usually have joint stiffness, swelling, and tenderness as well as intraarticular effusion. The incidence of this disease is not high – no more than 1% – but it may lead to irreversible changes and disability.

Three months later, after a consultation with a cardiorheumatologist, the girl was referred to a specialized clinic in Kharkiv. The diagnosis was confirmed. Every 3-6 month Dasha’s mother had to take her for a medical check-up. The girl also took one-month courses of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicines (Dicloberl).

In 2012, after tonsillitis, the girl started suffering from swellings in the right ankle joint and left elbow joint. The Kharkiv clinic changed the diagnosis to chronic infectious arthritis of joints. From this day on, Dasha’s life went upside down. Medications are like air for her. It is difficult without them and they make the girl feel better. She took Metoject subdermally and Dicloberl in tablets for two years. Nevertheless, she still felt stiffness in her joints, and then the doctors in Kharkiv offered her trying an expensive drug – Humira. It is an immunosuppressive drug which helps clearing off pain in joints.

Dasha has been receiving this drug for a year and a half, and now the family has to buy Humira with their own funds. The cost of one pack is USD 1 200. Humira helped the girl improve her health. She was able to attend an orient dance club and demonstrated good results. Her ankle works well, and her sick elbow bends and unbends almost completely. Dasha can even do the splits! “As a mother, I could see all those improvements after the therapy with Humira. It is essential for our daughter to keep taking this drug. We hope for your help”.
