Here are our heroes!

On Saturday, there was a meeting of children who completed their treatment courses for oncology more than three years ago and I want to share with you the joy I feel after this meeting. The stories of these children have strengthened my understanding of the fact that nothing is impossible for people who believe and don’t give up!

Looking at a cheerful 18 year-old boy, Dima Lutsenko, it’s hard to believe that he fell ill with leukemia at the age of 4, completed his medical treatment and had a relapse 8 years later. Besides, Dima had to fight hepatitis. But any “black” period in life is always followed by a “white” one. Dima has completed his first year of study at the economy faculty. He is studying to become a manager, is building plans for future and enjoying life! Dima, let this “white” period in your life never end!

Sasha Miruta has completed the 8th grade of the secondary school; he goes in for triathlon and has already won his first place in a competition. Sasha’s mother is grateful to the “Happy Child” Foundation volunteers who helped her to find an appropriate medical clinic and to save enough money for the operation of extraction of a non-malignant growth in Sasha’s brain. If not for the people who donated money, everything could have had much worse consequences.

Vitya Barabanov has recovered from a serious disease - lymphogranulomatosis, and he proudly informed us at the time of our talk that he was mastering a profession of a programmer and liked the studies very much. Dima and Vitya were very glad to meet because for some time they had stayed together in the hospital, so at the meeting they had lots of news to share with each other.

Danyl’s mother told us how at the time of Danyl’s treatment he asked her to explain him in detail what, where and how was surgically extracted during his operation; how they were looking at the operating-room window imagining what was going on inside. She also told us about the boy’s dream of becoming a surgeon. However, after the boy got well, he changed his mind. But the hobby of the time of his stay in the hospital remained: the boy models comic heroes from plastic clay and the results are great!

Watching the joyful chatter of the boys and their mothers and cheerful exchange of information I felt calm and merry at heart. I wanted to become an invisible wall protecting them from the hot sun and occasional piercing drafts of the cinema building where we talked: after all that they had to overcome I want them so much not to have any more pain, suffering and discomfort in their lives.

Before our meeting we planned to go to the hospital to talk with the children who were undergoing their treatments at the moment in order to support them and to show them on the examples of these boys that oncology is not a sentence. Due to a series of reasons we didn’t manage to visit the hospital but the boys supported my idea to write some cheering words on the palms for the sick children and to reveal to them the main secret of their recovery: Belief, Hope and high spirits! We also agreed that the next time we will organize a similar meeting in the hospital.

On behalf of the children and their mothers I want to thank the donors and participants of the Initiative group “Angel’s gift” - Thanks to you this meeting became possible! I’d like to address you, my dear readers! If you have a possibility and a wish to organize or to help with the organization of different activities for children who have recovered from oncological diseases, feel free to call the number specified below or to contact the Foundation staff. The fact that these children are not forgotten is a colossal support both for them and their parents.

Recovering of each child requires efforts of many people. We are grateful to all the people thanks to whom Dima, Sasha, Vitya, Danil and other children who recovered from oncological diseases are alive and healthy! We thank people who do their best for the children undergoing their treatments now to get well! So, however small your contribution to a child’s life may seem to you, it’s not in vain!
