=====================================

When Ekaterina found out about her pregnancy, she was in the seventh heaven. She wanted to share the news with every person in the street. There were tears of joy on her smiling face and probably there was nobody happier than Ekaterina at that moment. She took out her cell phone to tell the news to her husband and got the reply: “This is the best thing I’ve ever heard! My sweetheart, I love you!”

9 months passed like a day and the moment has come – on April, 5, 2009 a blue-eyed baby was born. The time flew, the child was developing and didn’t show health problems…until 2010. In August of that year all of sudden he felt bad. The parents turned to the doctors who thought it was pneumonia, and kept examining the boy. However a couple of days later Nikita got a cardiac arrest.

The 40 minutes during which the doctors were trying to save the life of their only child seemed like forever for Ekaterina and Ivan. And finally the doctor came out of the emergency room and looking aside told the parents - “As a result of the lung vessel thrombosis the child had a clinical death. We managed to save Nikita…” And then a sinister pause followed. It was obvious that the doctor hadn’t told all the truth. After asking about Nikita’s future they heard an unpromising “sentence”: because of the clinical death the child had an apallic syndrome (the state when the part of the brain responsible for learning skills and personality doesn’t function, a person has only simple reflexes and reactions).

Unfortunately after that the spouses split up. Nikita’s mom turned to various institutions in a hope to get any information and treatment recommendations and the dad decided he was not ready to live with a “handicapped” child.

The apallic syndrome is a severe and difficult diagnosis. It is difficult mostly because it is hard to tell if the brain damage is irreversible or there are chances to restore its functions. There were many cases in the medical world when people were cured of the apallic syndrome after a year or several years of treatment. It is possible only by the persistent treatment and rehabilitation. At the moment little Nikita is taken care of by the recreation therapists at the medical “Dovira” centre in Kiev. Every month the treatment expenses (for massage, drugs such as “Cogitum”, “Cerebrocurin”) reach 3-4 thousand hryvnyas (375-500 USD).

The doctors recommend that Nikita undergoes treatment at the specialized Central Clinical Children’s Sanatorium of the Ministry of Defence that is situated in Eupatoria, the Crimea. Ekaterina turned to our fund for help as the treatment costs 22 053 hryvnyas (we can show the bill). Nikita’s mom cannot pay for the costly treatment herself and his dad doesn’t participate in his kid’s life anymore; they began the divorce process.

Dear donors, we ask you to put yourself in the shoes of Nikita’s mom who is left alone with her problem. She has nobody to turn to, we are her only hope. The money for the treatment should be raised by November 2012. Let’s help her get the needed sum (6266.00 hryvnyas/784 US dollars) – and have the little boy defeat his illness, as “Nikita” means “Winner” (from Greek).
