Update as of 03/26/25: Sofia's parents have already purchased a hearing aid. We are continuing to collect for Myroslava.
Sofiika and Myroslava share the same diagnosis – bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. This condition means that sound enters the ear, but the nerve cells responsible for transmitting it to the brain are damaged or not functioning properly. To live in the world of sounds, the girls need hearing aids.
Eight-year-old Sofiika and her mother were forced to leave their hometown of Orikhiv due to the war. They fled under shelling in April 2022, without a clear plan but with one goal – to survive. Even before the war, Sofiika suffered from purulent otitis, after which her hearing began to deteriorate. Over time, it became evident that this was not a temporary issue but sensorineural hearing loss. This was a challenging ordeal for both Sofiika and her mother. Later, Sofiika received her first hearing aids and began working with a speech therapist.
Ten-year-old Myroslava dreams of playing the violin, but due to partial hearing loss, this is currently impossible. However, she listens with great admiration as her brother plays the guitar because she deeply loves music. Myroslava is in the fourth grade, but her hearing impairment makes it difficult for her to communicate with classmates and teachers. She is self-conscious about her difficulties and often feels insecure.
At the end of last year, Sofiika and Myroslava received modern hearing aids for one ear each through state funding. It was a moment of true happiness, as the girls heard sounds they had never heard before. However, to fully perceive sounds and navigate their surroundings, they need hearing aids for both ears. The cost of one hearing aid is 54,249 UAH (approximately 1,315 USD)., and neither family can afford to purchase them on their own.
Friends, we turn to you for help! Together, we can give Sofiika and Myroslava the chance to hear the world in its fullness, to develop, communicate, and live without limitations. Any support you provide will bring the girls closer to a bright and happy future!
