FORT MITCHELL - Ala. – A local family is looking to adopt half a dozen orphans from a second world country and they already have a full house.
News 3’s Ashley Lewis sits down with the Family to find out why they’re willing to spend more than $30,000 to adopt 6 kids from Ukraine.
Daniel Busenbark can’t sleep at night knowing there are kids in need and knowing he may be able to help.
“I look at the orphan problem and I think it’s too big there’s no way that I can solve this problem, but when I met these children I realized that I could save that one and I could save this one,” said Busenbark.
His wife Charlotte says their family met the orphans at Bridges of Faith, a ministry that hosts Ukrainian orphans for a month long cultural exchange.
Charlotte said, “As Christians I think that everybody is aware the concept of adoption and how in our salvation we were sort of adopted by God. Adopting earthly speaking is like the beautiful thing that God has done for us.”
Charlotte did research on the orphan problem in Ukraine and knew she had to do something.
“Within the first year of aging out 10% will commit suicide, over 10% will end up in prison and this is the one that got me where it sort of pushed me over the edge. 6 out of 10 girls who age out in the system will end up in violent sex trafficking,” said Charlotte.
Daniel says they didn’t originally plan on adopting six kids, but after looking into it… They found a way to save more lives.
“To think of the expense of 35-thousand dollars if you adopt in a group then it’s an additional 5-thousand dollars per child after that if you adopt them at the same time. So by adopting six at the same time we’re saving 100-thousand dollars,” said Daniel.
The Busenbark family has created a GoFundMe account to help raise money for the adoption process.
The money raised will be used to purchase u-s customs forms and lodging for a required 6 to 8 week stay in Ukraine.
There are also costs for airfare, court fees, paperwork, passports, and miscellaneous processes in both the U.S. and Ukraine.
