Sometimes a single moment can change a life forever. Just yesterday, 17-year-old Karina Dubchenko — a first-year journalism student — had countless plans, loved drawing, and enjoyed reading her favorite books. Today, she is lying in a hospital bed after a terrible road accident, fighting for the chance to move again.
On November 22, Karina was hit by a car while crossing a pedestrian crosswalk. She sustained severe injuries: multiple fractures of the cervical vertebrae with dislocations, pronounced spinal canal stenosis, a fracture of the neck of the right humerus, and head trauma. Three surgeries have already been performed, and Karina’s condition remains serious. She is conscious and can control the upper part of her body, but she is not yet able to move her legs. Doctors have begun rehabilitation, but remain cautious in their prognosis — a long and difficult recovery lies ahead.
Recently, Karina underwent an urgent surgery — osteosynthesis of the right clavicle, during which titanium rods costing 16,500 UAH were implanted. The girl’s family, internally displaced persons from Huliaipole, turned to our foundation for help. We agreed with the supplier on a payment deferral until the end of the month, as time is critical in this situation.
Unfortunately, the driver who hit Karina is not participating in covering the medical expenses. A court case lies ahead, but there is no time to wait — medical assistance is needed right now to preserve the girl’s health and give her a chance to recover.
We plan to raise 25,000 UAH (approximately 590 US dollars) to pay for the titanium rods and necessary medications. Help Karina return to a normal life!
