Sergei Safronov, 12 years old, is a patient in the hematology department of Zaporozhia regional children's hospital. He was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease, and has just finished his fifth course of chemotherapy. Since his diagnoses, Sergei and his family have had support from many kind people.
Sergei was always a healthy child. Then in February of this year, his mom noticed a swelling on his collarbone about the size of a chicken egg. He was seen first in the local medical clinic, and then by the district surgeon. Only a week later, Sergei saw a hematologist and was hospitalized with suspected "Hodgkin's lymphoma.” On March 1st, this diagnosis was confirmed and treatment began.
The Safronov family contacted the “Happy Child” charity fund in Zaporozhia. The fund was able to pay for two packages of "Natulanum" and two tomographic scans altogether costing $600. Mom Alina Safronov has received supported from their hometown including the students and teaching staff of the Kirov School which helped lighten the burden. Regional Council Deputy Vitaly Lupynos and others presented the collected money which helped with the next two courses of treatment.
Orikhivsky Charitable Foundation "Hope Child" has also helped to supply some of the necessary drugs for Sergei’s chemotherapy.
Unfortunately, the funds are now exhausted to continue with the next phase of treatment.
Even though he is only 12, Sergei has endured everything like an adult remaining very calm and very patient. He has made it through all five courses of treatment, without tears or hysterics, supported by his mother
Ahead of our young hero, as he bravely battles this serious illness, is the 6th course of chemotherapy. This will be followed by radiation, recovery, and rehabilitation. The family must purchase certain medicines in addition to the treatment. Therefore, this rural family will need continued support. Each course or treatment varies in price from $320 to $600.
