Andrey is very unsociable. He does not like playing with other children and does not like anyone touching him. Music irritates him. This is what Andrey’s teacher has informed me about this boy. This description aroused my enormous curiosity and I decided to check out Andrey’s personality.

I took along a musical piano which turned out to be the loudest toy in the orphanage. If this very toy happened to drive Andrey mad – I can easily understand him. Well, I put this little piano into Andrey’s bed and one by one switched on various melodies. As soon as Andrey heard the sounds of music he gradually began to roll in his bed. Somehow he slowly turned ever closer to the source of the music.

This boy was obviously enjoying the music! I kept on watching in bewilderment how Andrey was rolling together with the music beats. Later, in the same way as he started to “dance”, he suddenly started to weep. Music does not irritate him since his weeping is a sign of despair, hopelessness and his limited physical abilities. It’s not just about his life prospects but in the scale of his little world – his bed.

I switched the music off and stroked his hand and then his head. He calmed down with his tears still silently streaming down his cheeks. I again switched the music on. He was smiling and “dancing” and soon again started to weep. Even though one could envy Andrey the strength of his spirit – one would never wish to be so physically limited like this boy.

Children like Andrey desperately bang their heads, bite themselves and are constantly feeling such pain as we can never imagine. Andrey’s tears may somehow soothe his emotional pain. Hope is the only thing Andrey has. I wish he also had someone who could bring him the long-awaited joy he feels when he listens to music. May Andrey’s future Mom hear him…

If you are interested in adopting Andrey, please read the memo to the potential adoptive parents, guardians, and foster parents; you can also contact Children’s Affairs' service of the Zaporozhia State Administration by telephone (061) 239-01-56 and to tell them the number of Andrey's profile accordingly to the orphan list # 0056884.
