A car is not a luxury: this is an opportunity to help indigent people

June 10, 2019, 11:30 155 Author: Natalia Moroz; Victor Barabanov www.deti.zp.ua Every trip to a medical institution for disabled people is an ordeal.

What could be sadder for a person than to be isolated from the world and unable to go outside? Whenever medical services in another part of the city are necessary, getting there is not only difficult physically for a disabled person, but also expensive.

Since 2013, Charity Foundation Happy Child has been trying to solve transportation problems for disabled children who have applied for help; but for some time, our eight-seat Renault Traffic minibus has been stationed in the village of Ukrainka to serve the needs of foster families. (For foster families who are living in far from urban infrastructure, a car is not merely a means of transportation, but an urgent necessity. The nearest grocery store is 20 km from the village. If a child is suddenly ill, then fast delivery to the nearest first aid post reduces health risks.)

Another car serves families living in Kalinovka, Chernihiv region, where 14 children with disabilities live in two houses. It is difficult to overestimate the need for a large motor vehicle for people with limited mobility. A vehicle is also used to transport volunteer groups performing concerts for adult inpatients at psychoneurological facilities.

The Foundation needs a motor vehicle to help sick and disabled children in the Zaporizhye oblast in our Social Taxi project. We would like to fortify this project that has been running since 2013 and has assisted in transporting children and young people with cancer for examination in medical institutions, children with disabilities to convalescent centers, and on excursions (to museums, a circus, Khortytsya Island, Azov Sea) for those with cerebral palsy and other disability groups.

Four children from the convalescent center in Shcherbinovka visited Kyiv in March 2014.

Thanks to Social Taxi, five children from the orphanage in Kalinovka visited Crimea.

Our regular customers were and hopefully will be more than 80 disabled children, if enough caring people help us to buy a vehicle. Perhaps it won't be new, but in good condition, with capacity to seat at least 6 people and to carry a wheelchair. The cost of such a used vehicle is approximately US$17,000.

Without our support, six-year-old Kira Kargieva will not be able to continue essential rehabilitation and corrective therapy sessions. Please help us raise funds for treatment and development of the girl!
