Zaporizhzhia Regional Tuberculosis Dispensary, Children's Department

January 26, 2016, 18:00 35 Author: Kirchenko Roman www.deti.zp.ua The children’s department of the tuberculosis dispensary likely has the longest treatment protocols — children remain in the department for up to 20 months. That’s why they require special attention and care.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE HOSPITAL

The Children’s Department of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Tuberculosis Dispensary is a separate building — essentially a separate home. A real home, where children, parents, doctors, and nurses live together like one big family. Tuberculosis treatment protocols require a course of 6 to 20 months, and such a lengthy stay inevitably forms close bonds between people. Unfortunately, the department never lacks patients. In recent years, cases of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis have been increasingly diagnosed in the region, including in children. The most vulnerable are the youngest.

The department treats children with active forms of tuberculosis as well as children from at-risk groups for preventive care. School-aged children continue their studies according to the general school program with teachers from an affiliated boarding school.

The department has 60 beds for children aged 0 to 18. 75% of the children are orphans or come from low-income families. Most children stay in the department for 6–8 months, while 19 children are undergoing treatment for drug-resistant tuberculosis with a course lasting 20 months.

HOSPITAL NEEDS

o minimize the toxic effects of anti-TB medications, children require vitamins, hepatoprotectors, and immune stimulants — purchases that are not covered by the state budget. The monthly need for these medications is UAH 4,000–5,000.

Over the past year, there has been a significant increase in the number of children under the age of 2 diagnosed with tuberculosis — currently, there are 15 such children in the department. There is an urgent need for diapers.

A portable oxygen concentrator is critically needed to provide emergency care to children (estimated cost — UAH 23,000).

There is a need to replace 20 beds for teenagers.

Thanks to your help, we have already purchased the oxygen concentrator and 20 new beds.

In September, a children's gazebo was installed on the premises (providing shade in hot weather and protection from bad weather in the cold season). This structure, costing UAH 62,000, was built on credit. The remaining amount to be paid is UAH 22,000.

The surrounding area of the department remains a problem. One side of the building is bordered by garages, the other by a fence, and the main entrance is lined with gray concrete slabs. There’s an idea to brighten up the space by painting 11 of these concrete panels with colorful characters (wildlife, characters from the “Madagascar” cartoon, jungle scenes). The first part of the fence has already been painted. The remaining funds needed for painting: UAH 7,000.
